From Prompt to Context to Memory: The Arc, Grounded on AWS

A while back I argued that context engineering had quietly replaced prompt engineering as the skill that decides whether an agent is any good [1]. That piece was the framing. This one is the build.

I want to walk the whole arc, from phrasing a prompt, to engineering the entire context window, to persisting memory across sessions, and show which managed AWS service owns each rung. There is runnable code for the load-bearing steps, in a public repo, so this is a map you can clone and start from rather than a diagram to nod at.

Which of Your Work Is Actually Verifiable?

TL;DR: Two well-argued pieces already say the same thing about the AI era: AI takes over the work that is cheap to verify, and human value moves to the expensive verification that is left. Jason Wei calls it the verifier’s rule; Christian Catalini calls it the Measurability Gap. Neither of them models what happens when you misjudge how verifiable a task is. A lecture by Zeynep Tufekci made me doubt that I can reliably tell. So this post adds one thing on top of their work and applies it to my own craft: the risk for a Solutions Architect is not that our verifiable work gets automated, but that we routinely misjudge which of our work is verifiable in the first place. I sort real SA artifacts by how expensive they are to check, and the sort is not the one instinct hands you.

I spent part of an internal conference recently listening to a talk about the future of my own job. One of the talks pointed at a public lecture by the sociologist Zeynep Tufekci, and that pointer sent me to the full ninety-one minutes [1]. I went in expecting an argument about whether AI takes the Solutions Architect job. I came out with a sharper and more uncomfortable question, which is the one I want to hand you.

Terms in the 402: The Payment Challenge That Also Tells You What You're Licensed To Do

TL;DR: An HTTP 402 usually just quotes a price. In the last post I argued that terms (what you’re licensed to do) and payment (the money) are different layers that belong together on one origin. Here I build exactly that: a tiny, public, self-contained publisher whose 402 response carries both a price and its license terms: an RSL-style license link (via the Link: rel="license" header) and a CoMP-style usage declaration at a well-known URI. An agent declares its intended use, reads the terms, refuses the uses the license prohibits, pays for the ones it permits, and gets the content. The whole thing runs locally with zero dependencies, and the code is on GitHub.

Disclaimer: I’m a solutions architect who builds small things to understand big ones. This is a local, simulated demo. Payment verification is stubbed and the publisher is fictional. It mirrors the contract of an edge 402 so you can read every byte, not a production payment system. On the licensing semantics, treat it as a builder’s sketch, not legal guidance.

Where the last post left off

Part 4 made a layered argument: HTTP plus x402 handle delivery and payment, while RSL and the IAB’s CoMP handle terms — what an agent is licensed to do with the bytes after it pays. The two are complementary, and the interesting move is to put them on one origin so the 402 that charges an agent also tells it what the purchase licenses.
