๐ During this autumn weekend in Germany, I’ve had plenty of time for deep diving into research. My reading of “The Multiple Paths to Multiple Life” by Christopher P. Kempes and David C. Krakauer was inspired by another captivating episode of the Machine Learning Street Talk (MLST) podcast.
๐ฌ Chris explains how scientists are transcending traditional Earth-based, biological perspectives in search of a universal theory of lifeโone that could apply anywhere in the universe. Intriguingly, he suggests that phenomena we don’t typically consider “alive”โlike human culture, language, or artificial intelligenceโcould be viewed as life forms existing on different “substrates.”
๐ฏ The framework he presents consists of three fascinating levels:
ย ย ๐งฑ Materials: The physical building blocks of life. These could vary dramatically across the universeโalien life needn’t share our biochemistry.
ย ย โ๏ธ Constraints: Universal physical laws (like gravity or diffusion) that govern all life forms, regardless of composition.
ย ย ๐งฎ Principles: The highest levelโabstract concepts like evolution and learning. These computational or “optimization” rules might be what truly defines a living system.
๐ก Both in the paper and podcast, Chris brings this framework to life with compelling examples, expanding our perspective on what life could be.
๐ค So, is your AI Agent alive? Probably not (yet?!), but exploring this question through such a framework opens up fascinating new perspectives.
