Generate-and-Verify: What P vs NP Teaches Us About AI Reasoning

TL;DR: The defining feature of the complexity class NP is polynomial-time verifiability: a candidate answer is cheap to check. The asymmetry that matters shows up in its hardest members, the NP-complete problems, where finding an answer has no known polynomial-time algorithm and is widely believed to have none, even though checking one stays easy. That same asymmetry explains a lot of how modern AI reasoning works. Test-time compute spends more effort on the search, a verifier or reward model or unit test plays the cheap checker, and an agent loop is just propose-then-verify repeated. The payoff can be real on compute: in compute-matched tests a small, reliable verifier gating a strong generator beats scaling the generator alone, with published results showing test-time search outperforming a much larger model on problems the smaller one can already sometimes solve — though dollar cost and latency are separate axes you have to measure. The catch is equally real: the trick only pays when a cheap, trustworthy checker exists, a wrong verifier is worse than none, and none of this means a language model “solves” NP-hard problems. It searches, and lets a cheap check do the confirming.

At university, the P versus NP question arrived as a kind of magic trick that turned out not to be a trick at all. Checking an answer is easy; finding one can be brutally hard. Hand me a completed Sudoku and I can check it in seconds; completing a partially filled grid is a different kind of effort — and for the generalised n×n version, that completion problem is provably NP-complete. That gap between checking and solving felt like a curiosity back then. It is now, quietly, one of the load-bearing ideas in how we get more out of AI models.

Laws & Disorder #3 — Tesler's Law: You Can't Delete Complexity, Only Choose Who Owns It

TL;DR: Tesler’s Law, the conservation of complexity, says a system has an inherent amount of complexity that can be reallocated between owners but never deleted. The useful move is to split that into two numbers most people conflate: the total complexity of the whole system, and the complexity you personally have to manage and operate. Adopting a well-run managed service shrinks the second number, which is a genuine win. But a component you didn’t right-size still adds to the first. AI now makes it cheap to build a focused component with exactly the features you need and less inherent complexity than a general-purpose product, which can lower the total, but you now own and operate it, so what you manage goes up. Buy less to manage, build with AI for less total but you hold the pager. Optimize the complexity you actually manage, and keep an eye on the total.

Stop Guessing Which Coding Agent to Use — Benchmark It on Your Own Tasks

TL;DR: Generic coding-agent leaderboards don’t tell you which model or tool fits your work at a budget you’re willing to spend. So I built a small task set that mirrors my real work and ran an open-source framework (aws-samples/sample-agent-cost-bench) that measures cost, quality, and latency together. Two findings surprised me: the priciest model (Opus 4.8) missed a task that a mid-priced one (Sonnet 4.6) passed at a third of the cost, and, when comparing the same model across two tools, the per-credit rate you actually pay can flip which tool looks cheaper. All numbers below are from real runs I did on 2026-07-16.

Every few weeks a new coding-agent leaderboard makes the rounds, and every time the question I actually care about goes unanswered: not “which model tops a public benchmark” but “which model, wrapped in which CLI, does my kind of work well enough at a price I’m happy to pay.” Those are two different questions, and neither shows up on a generic leaderboard built from someone else’s tasks.
