Your AI Pair Programmer Is Playing Single-Player

TL;DR: I run what looks like a small team of agents — a backlog of delegated tasks, subagents for research and drafting, a whole operating model for handing work to machines. It feels collaborative. Maggie Appleton’s argument made me realize it isn’t: nearly every AI coding tool today, including my elaborate setup, is still fundamentally single-player. One human, their context, their agents, their session. Software is a team sport, and we’ve built AI assistance as if it were solitaire. My thesis: that gap, not model quality alone, is the next real frontier.

The uncomfortable realization

I’ve spent a good chunk of the last year building what I’d have called a “team” of agents. There’s a delegation backlog. There are subagents that go off and research or draft while I do something else. I’ve written about managing agents like you’d manage a team [2]: assigning work, reviewing output, keeping judgment in the loop.

Your Website's Second Audience Just Got Its Own Ads

TL;DR: A few months ago I built an agent-optimized version of this site: when an AI crawler asks for a page, it gets clean Markdown instead of my full HTML. Time Magazine built the same thing, then did something I didn’t: it started selling ad space inside that Markdown. AI crawlers now receive a sponsored FAQ unit, written by a brand, that no human visitor ever sees. Detection is plain User-Agent matching, every fetch mints a fresh impression ID, and the “impression” is measured in tokens, not eyeballs. This is Part 1 of three: the mechanics down to the HTTP headers. Part 2 tests whether the ad actually changes an agent’s answer; Part 3 asks who ends up paying.

A layer I built, and someone else monetized

Back in March I wrote about making this website agent-friendly: a small edge function that hands AI crawlers a stripped-down Markdown version of each page instead of the full, image-heavy HTML a browser gets. It was a capability post. Agents read the web now, they pay a token tax for every byte of markup they don’t need, so give them a clean representation and everyone wins.

Laws & Disorder #6 — Amara's Law: It's Not AGI — But the Value Is Already Real

TL;DR: Amara’s Law says we overestimate a technology’s impact in the short run and underestimate it in the long run, and the Gartner Hype Cycle draws the same shape: an inflated peak, a trough of disillusionment, then a slope toward real productivity. My job as a solutions architect is to guide teams and customers through that lifecycle, because every genuine innovation arrives wrapped in hype and the distillation takes time. My personal view, as of 2026: there is no sign that AGI is reachable with the current set of technologies, and the AGI framing has been hype that both overpromises and, worse, gets used to stoke fear about adopting AI at all. But here is the balancing truth I see every day in my own work and with customers: even though it is not AGI, there is enormous real value in adopting AI now. It removes joyless boilerplate, makes people more effective, and frees humans for higher-level work. The AGI peak is the short-term overestimate. The quiet, already-useful AI is the long-term value we underrate. Both are true at once. Stop arguing about AGI and place the technology on the curve for your workload.
